Mermaids save the Pirates -- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Movie Review

Potato On-the-Go:

I was one of those captured by the spell of the first ever Pirates of the Caribbean movie.  And that hooked me for every Pirates sequel produced.  Now, the movie is already on its 4th and (in 3D!) via Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides narrates the expedition to the Fountain of Youth by three naval groups.  First are the Spanish ships, second is the Blackbeard ship led by Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Angelica (Penelope Cruz) who abducted Captain Jack Sparrow to help them navigate the seas and find what they are looking for and third is the English ship led by Captain Hector Berbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and aided by Sparrow's Black Pearl fellow Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally).

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides somehow delivered the brand of entertainment experience that ignited the hit movie franchise (although I still consider the first as the best Pirates of the Caribbean offer ever).  It has the mix of fantasy, adventure, fun and humor.  A film would never go wrong with the interplay of the right family adventure elements: Pirates, Mermaids and Fountain of Youth.  With three expeditions on the race to the fountain of youth, a good load of action and adventure is in store in this movie.

As expected, Johnny Depp is not just a captain in the story but in the acting department as well.  His brand of humor never failed to entertain the audience from start to finish.  The two other captains in the movie, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane, equally showed their acting versatility.

For the kids and the kids at heart, the pirates backdrop is of course, as always, a magnificent cinematic view. We are always awed and intrigued on how a pirate's life look like.

Something to look forward to in this sequel is the entry of the mermaid characters who displayed enchantment, mystery and adventure.  They are not the usual mermaids that we know but they definitely spiced up the movie.

The movie started quite slow as the film's characters got derailed with shallow personal reasons, ordeals and situations but once the pirates hit the mermaids lair, the adventure and fun became unstoppable.

I am definitely initially impressed with the 3D technology used in the film but I think it could have been further maximized especially in the underwater scenes.  Sometimes, especially at the last quarter of the film, I hardly noticed the 3D effect at all.

I also wished that another "treasure" to find is used in the story.  We've seen a lot of movies that deal with the quest for the "fountain of youth". But nevertheless, the action, suspense and excitement made this hunt somehow a nice movie experience as well.

From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides a 6 1/2.
