Manila Plays Manila for the First Time in a Hollywood Film -- THE BOURNE LEGACY Director Tony Gilroy Talks about Manila not just as a shoot location but as a setting

 P.O.T.G. BULLETIN (Movie):

During preproduction, of The Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy toured Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Manila in the Philippines. Ultimately, Manila’s history as a shooting location won over the team. Major Hollywood features, such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July and Brokedown Palace, were shot in the Philippines in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. “They had a 25-, 30-year run of making movies there,” says Gilroy, “and they have this huge infrastructure that was built up from all the films made about Vietnam.”

The filmmaker called upon LOPE V. JUBAN, JR., president of Philippine Film Studios, who has worked on most of the films that have come to the Philippines over the past few decades, to give them a tour of Manila. Not only could Juban—who came on as a line producer—offer locations that Gilroy was looking for, but his contacts with government entities would also be vital for a shoot that involved major stunts on city streets. “Juban said, ‘We can talk to the president about that,’ or ‘We can talk to the minister of transportation and the police department about that.’ They’re all people that he knew,” Crowley explains. “I couldn’t have gotten that in Jakarta or in Ho Chi Minh City.”

Every year, more than half of the children who enroll in and finish grade school are not able to enter high school. According to studies, school children drop out of school because of malnutrition, health and sanitation reasons, difficult access to the nearest school, and child labor. The underlying culprit: poverty.  During the late 1990s, lay Catholic organization Couples for Christ (CFC) had been led to turn their focus on the poor. Subsequently, programs on shelter rehabilitation, education and livelihood were funded and implemented, initially in Metro Manila. In the year 2000, inspired by the theme from Luke 4:18, Couples for Christ embraced the work of bringing glad tidings to the poor.

In “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days,” which combines elements of both the third and fourth of the “Wimpy Kid” books, the good news is that school is out for the summer and Greg is looking forward to a vacation spent playing video games, hanging out with his best friend, Rowley, and working his way into the affections of the girl he has a crush on, Holly Hills. The bad news is that Greg Heffley being Greg Heffley, nothing is going to go as planned.

Direk Jose Javier Reyes introduces the concept of "maindie" film via his Cinemalaya entry Mga Mumunting Lihim (Those Little Secrets)

POTATO ON THE GO FEATURE (Movie):

With the never ending debate between indie and commercial films, Direk Jose Javier Reyes comes into the picture with a happy median called "maindie".  With "maindie", Direk Joey hopes that it will bridge the two by bringing the people to love independent films and by making talents behind commercial movies experiment and continue to hone their artistry.

This is the primary idea that I learned in a recent blogcon with Direk Jose Javie Reyes.  Direk Joey is finally joining this year's Cinemalaya's Director Showcase via MGA MUMUNTING LIHIM (Those Little Secrets), the first independent film he wrote and directed.  But for Direk Joey, MGA MUMUNTING LIHIM introduces the idea of maindie.  In a writing career that spans thirty years and a listing of directorial works close to sixty movies, this is the very first time that Direk Joey ventured into making a film outside the studio system to finally join what he deems as the new directions and the true future of Philippine cinema.  Admittedly, he concedes that no mainstream studio will agree to produce a project that defies conventional storytelling and, more so, places popular mainstream actresses against their usual typecast.

Scottish Story of BRAVE Springs From Real Life Experiences

 P.O.T.G. BULLETIN (Movie):

The story of Disney/Pixar's new animnated feature “Brave” was very personal for the film’s directors, Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman. They drew from the experiences of their own families, combining that with their Scottish heritage and love of the country. With their strong backgrounds in storytelling and filmmaking, they were able to weave a tale that was original, emotionally stirring and full of thrilling adventure.

“Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources—including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late, and discover the meaning of true bravery.

P.O.T.G. BULLETIN (Movie):

Directed by Sam Raimi, “Oz The Great and Powerful” imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Kunis), Evanora (Weisz) and Glinda (Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
